The Importance of Senior Elderly Care (Part I)
Certain conditions in life such as a chronic illness, frailty, or poor memory can make it difficult
for many seniors to live alone. While a nursing home and assisted living used to be the only
choices for seniors with these problems, now elderly care can be provided in the senior’s own
home.
Support Senior’s Independence and Improve His Quality of Life
More and more seniors are taking advantage of this new way of aging, because it encourages
them to live as independently as possible and improve the quality of their lives.
In-home care providers offer various types of assistance. Below are some of the senior elderly
care services available in most areas of the country today:
• Light housekeeping
• Changing of bed linens and laundry
• Cooking
• Grocery shopping and errands
• Companionship
• Assistance with some motion exercises
• Bathing, grooming, and dressing assistance
• Transportation to pharmacy, supermarket, and medical appointments
• Help with walking and moving from bed to wheelchair
• Medication reminders
• Reporting the senior’s status to his family
Round-the-Clock or Part-Time
Senior elderly care services may be provided either on a full-time or part-time basis. Professional
caregivers provide senior elderly care and companionship from a few hours a week to ‘round the
clock’.
Live-in Home Care
A live-in home caregiver is someone who provides round-the-clock senior elderly care in the
client’s home. This means that he is available to provide assistance from morning until evening,
7 days a week.
While clients can choose any caregiver they want, most in-home agencies would evaluate their
needs and find someone who best matches them. This is to ensure consistency over a longer
period of time. Also, a primary caregiver is usually assigned to provide senior elderly care for
four-to five days each week. Then a back-up caregiver is also assigned to provide care for the
rest of week. In home caregivers are able to provide senior clients with emotional support,
companionship, and safety. They make sure that clients receive their full attention the whole day
and maintain a healthy and positive environment for them.
Most live-in caregivers exhibit professionalism in that they only stay in their client’s properties
during their designated days and times. They are also not allowed to use any of their client’s
properties for their personal use, and this includes such things as television, phone, and car.
Senior clients who are hospitalized can also receive round-the clock care from senior elderly
caregivers. During hospital stays, caregivers can monitor the safety of their clients as well as
provide companionship. Home caregivers may also be requested to provide personal attention to
residents of nursing home or assisted living facilities.
